Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram uses ultrasound waves to watch the heart move in real time to check for abnormalities in the structure and function of the heart. It is a harmless, non-invasive test that does not require any special preparation, such as fasting. It is recommended when symptoms of heart disease are suspected (shortness of breath, chest pain, heart palpitations, fainting, etc.), when the patient has a family history of inherited heart conditions, or when heart disease is suspected based on the results of a chest x-ray, electrocardiogram, and/or blood tests. It is used to diagnose heart valve disease, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, myocardial disease, congenital heart defects, etc.
