Bone Density Test (DEXA, Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry)
There are three main ways to check bone density: ultrasound, quantitative CT, and DEXA. Among them, the ultrasound bone density test, where measurements are taken from the wrist or heel, is simple and has no radiation exposure, but has a low accuracy rate. The CT method has a high accuracy rate, but the downside is high radiation exposure. On the other hand, DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) compensates for the shortcomings of both methods, with high accuracy and low radiation exposure, and is the most commonly used test for measuring bone density to diagnose osteoporosis. The bone density test equipment at our hospital is DEXA-based, and it can be used to not only diagnose osteoporosis but also measure bone density, body composition, and sarcopenia.

Osteoporosis is a condition that occurs due to smoking, alcohol, low body weight, as well as genetic factors and aging among other causes of a reduced amount and strength of bone, making fractures more likely to occur from even mild impacts.
Purpose of the Bone Density Test
Osteoporosis increases the likelihood of refracture after a fracture occurs and may be accompanied by complications. Therefore, the purpose of early diagnosis is to prevent the aggravation of symptoms by employing conservative treatment methods such as lifestyle improvement and non-drug therapy.
